Rent a Holiday Home and Discover the Beauties Of Scotland

Filed Under Articles · Tagged:

There is probably no country in the world that provides such an extraordinary variety of holiday destinations as Scotland.  If you are thinking of renting a holiday home in Scotland, your main problem will be deciding where to go.

Most people from south of the Border, when they think of Scotland, immediately think of the Highlands.  And of course, that’s where you can encounter some of the most sensational scenery in the world.  If you rent a loch-side cottage in late spring, you can imagine waking up in the morning to the sun glinting on the glorious crimsons, pinks and purples of the rhododendrons against the backdrop of the dark mountains sweeping down to the water, with no sound except the waves rippling on the little beach.  You will think you’re in heaven!

But of course there’s so much more to Scotland than the Highlands.  It’s just so incredibly varied for such a tiny country.  Have you thought of the quaint, pretty fishing villages on the East Coast, each with its own individual charms?  You can stay in a harbourside cottage looking straight out at the fishing boats and the smooth sandy beach.  If you fancy a golfing holiday, you can combine the charms of the East coast with the very special beauties of St Andrews, the “auld grey toon by the sea”.  Many think St Andrews, with its ancient grey university and quaint little streets running down to the gorgeous sandy beach with its rock pools, is one of the loveliest towns in the world.  And that’s without its legendary golf courses, including the renowned Old Course, one of the world’s greatest.  St Andrews and its neighbouring villages provide a wonderful choice of holiday properties of all types, but you still need to get in fast because there is a lot of competition, from golfers and non-golfers alike.

It may be fishing rather than golf that appeals to you, and Scotland is renowned for its fishing, especially salmon, trout and coarse angling.  You can take a holiday cottage close to a river or loch almost anywhere in the country.  Special places include the Tweed in the Borders and several rivers in Perthshire including the Tay, which combine unparalleled richness of fishing with extraordinary beautiful scenery.

In fact, whatever kind of holiday you fancy, you can find it in Scotland.  There is climbing in abundance in Highland, Grampian or Cairngorm – and skiing too at the right time of year.  Or if you are keen on abbeys, castles and ancient stately homes, there is a wonderful choice.  If you find a holiday cottage amidst the unique wild beauty of the Borders, for example near Melrose or Jedburgh, you have no less than four ancient abbeys within a short drive, as well as many enchanting old houses like Traquair House, all steeped in the special magical quality that only belongs to the Border country.

You may have hesitated about holidaying in Scotland because you may be afraid the weather won’t be very good.  Of course Scotland has its share of wet weather and nobody can guarantee what it will be like at any given time!  But many people who have stayed in Scotland will testify that they have had long periods of glorious sunny weather while the rest of the country has been wet and windy!  And the advantage of a holiday cottage, rather than an hotel or a B&B, is that there is always something to do.

If you’re new to Scotland, you have so many delights to discover – perhaps this is the year you will discover them.

A Holiday Home in Glorious Devon

Filed Under Articles · Tagged:

Why should you rent a holiday cottage in Devon?  If you long for an escape to timeless beauty and tranquillity, there is simply nowhere else to choose.

Your dilemma may rather be, where in Devon to choose for your holiday cottage?  It’s unbelievable how there could be so much richness and variety in such a small corner of the country.

Try North Devon if you would like to escape the crowds.  North Devon is still the county’s undiscovered secret, with its mysterious woodlands and hidden rocky coves.  If you like walking there is an unlimited choice, including the Little Hangman and Great Hangman hills at Combe Martin, Torrington Commons, Watersmeet and many more.  Wherever you go you enjoy a constant vista of rolling hills and beautiful rivers.  You don’t even need a long walk for exercise – visit perfect Clovelly, known as one of the prettiest villages in the world, and you will find the steep cobbled high street down to the quay is a challenge for the keenest walker.  If you really can’t manage it, there is a landrover shuttle between the car park and the quayside.

Devon contains not one but two National Parks – small, but two of the loveliest.  You can travel easily from one to the other, yet either provides more than enough for a complete holiday.  In fact you will find there isn’t enough time to explore all the delights of Exmoor – the steep wooded ravines, awesome waterfalls and rocky headlands.  Dartmoor is famous for its stark windswept Tors.  You can roam freely across miles of wild unspoilt moorland, enjoying the rich wild life and now and again coming across remains of its ancient history.

Devon has one of the best climates in Britain, which means that you don’t need to confine yourself to the height of summer.  You can have a lovely holiday there at any time of year and it’s quite common to find people enjoying the splendid beaches in the middle of winter.  Of course it does rain sometimes, but when it does there are plenty of things to do.  For children there are many all-weather attractions including Cascades, the indoor adventure pool, the Big Sheep or the Milky Way.  Whereas for adults, everywhere you go there are enchanting shops and galleries, markets and small craft outlets.  But of course, if you have taken a holiday cottage rather than staying in a B&B or hotel, you may not even need to go out at all – it’s likely that your cottage will have games, music, TV and DVDs.

And the variety of self-catering holiday cottages in Devon is boundless.  You can choose from complexes of beautifully fitted-out holiday homes with swimming pools, enchanting centuries-old farmhouses, luxury waterside apartments, and elegant townhouses.  You can find tiny thatched cottages with lots of character, or modern bungalows with every possible comfort.  Or perhaps you fancy superbly converted stone barns, hidden away on a small Devon farm and surrounded by glorious gardens and countryside.

So the hardest job you have will be making your choice of holiday properties in Devon.  Once you have made it, you can relax and enjoy a perfect holiday.  But don’t delay too long – you may find other people have had the same idea!

Magical Cornwall For Your Holiday Home

Filed Under Articles · Tagged:

Cornwall is magical.  There are plenty of beautiful areas in the UK, but none that has this exact enchanted quality.  You sense it the moment you cross the River Tamar and immediately know you are in another country where anything could happen.

So where better to rent your holiday cottage?  There is no answer to this.  The question you have to ask is, “Where in Cornwall do I rent my holiday cottage?”

If you’re a stranger to Cornwall, perhaps you have only heard about Rick Stein’s fish restaurant, the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan.  All of these are well worth a visit, but there’s infinitely more to Cornwall than that.  Cornwall is the land of “special” holidays – so what kind of “special” holiday do you want?

If it’s a beach you are looking for, choose a cottage near the north coast of Cornwall and it won’t be just the ordinary bucket-and-spade holiday you find.  This is the land of myth and legend.  Just after crossing the border you come to Tintagel, steeped in the myths of King Arthur.  You can walk along the cliff path to Trebarwith Strand in time for lunch at Port William, one of the most spectacular and dramatic pubs in England, right out on the headland.

Further west you come to Rock which provides an unforgettable stay – you can charter a boat and spend a blissful holiday by, on and in the water.  This is one of the most stunning locations in a stunning county, with golden, white sandy beaches and sensational views across to Padstow.  There are a wealth of holiday cottages here, but you’ll have to pay – and book early as there’s lots of competition, including from the rich and famous!  Continuing westward, you find Bedruthan Steps, with its awesome series of rocks reputed to be the stepping stones of a giant.  And so it continues all the way to the west, past the enchanting St Ives, loved by artists for its perfection, and the mysterious Zennor with its field formations suggesting prehistoric occupation.

If it’s a sailing holiday that attracts you, try Falmouth in the south for some of the best sailing in the country.  The Fal estuary or the creeks of the Helford River with their deep blue water are unmatched anywhere for beauty – and still that special magical quality.  It’s easy to sail further afield – east to Fowey and St Mawes, west to the Isles of Scilly.  Round every headland you encounter delightful surprises, like St Just in Roseland, with its tiny church and its church grounds full of lush semi-tropical vegetation, stretching down to the sea.  The choice of holiday cottages in and around Falmouth is almost unlimited – grand houses in their own grounds, complexes with their own pools, bewitching little whitewashed cottages, charming townhouses on the quaint streets of Falmouth, overlooking the estuary.

It would spoil the magic of Cornwall to describe every little nook and cranny.  But however many times you go back, you still find more special little corners to discover.  This would be a good year to start your journey of discovery.  But book your holiday cottage early – they don’t stay empty for long.

Holiday Cottages Devon – Choosing is the hardest thing

Filed Under Articles · Tagged:

When you think of Devon you probably picture the quintessential English village, with enchanting cottages, cream teas and glorious scenery.  In actual fact this is exactly what Devon is like, and it’s hard to imagine a better place for a UK cottage holiday.

If you are thinking of looking at holiday cottages in Devon, you may find you are overwhelmed by the choices available.  To narrow down your choice, you may need to decide what aspect of beautiful Devon appeals to you most, and what kind of holiday you are looking for.

Perhaps you are interested in a walking holiday.  One of the most spectacular areas in the whole country is Lynton and Lynmouth on the north Devon coast.  Not only does it have the most magnificent coastal views and a wealth of exciting coastal paths and nature trails through awe-inspiring scenery.  It is also adjacent to the glorious Exmoor National Park, which has an incredible variety of walking from strenuous to gentle – including high wild moorland, riverside paths, the Two Moors way and the South West coastal path.  There is a wonderful selection of holiday homes including fisherman’s cottages near secluded coves, charming little village hideaways close to ancient pubs, or former farmhouses with only the Exmoor ponies to disturb you.

If you are thinking of a less energetic holiday amid the picturesque beauty of quaint towns and villages, try looking at holiday cottages in South Devon.  You would enjoy the lovely old towns of Salcombe and Dartmouth with their quaint streets and busy marinas.  You can find gorgeous luxury apartments and town houses there, as well as pretty cottages in the outlying villages.  There are all sorts of water activities from sailing and rowing to a pleasure boat on the River Dart.  And with Dartmouth’s seemingly infinite variety of unique shops and galleries, you will almost welcome a wet day to give you more chance to explore!

You may be searching for holiday cottages in Devon with the idea of a more traditional seaside holiday.  You can hardly fail to find what you want in Torbay, surrounding its gloriously beautiful bay.  You can choose from exotic Torquay with its marinas and palm trees, Brixham with its fishing harbour and tiers of coloured houses and fisherman’s cottages rising up from the water’s edge, Paignton with its beaches and zoo, or Teignmouth high up with its wonderful views over the estuary.  Whatever kind of seaside holiday you like you can find it in Torbay with its wonderful sandy beaches, watersports, and little hidden coves.  You can also find all sorts of holiday accommodation here, including comfortable modern bungalows with all amenities and well-appointed holiday flats, as well as traditional cottages.

Devon really does have everything – no matter what sort of holiday you want, you won’t be disappointed.  What’s more it has one of the best climates in the British Isles. That doesn’t mean it never rains! Of course it does sometimes and that’s what makes it so lush, luxuriant and leafy.  Holiday cottages in Devon provide you with your best chance to enjoy and explore this very special part of England – and somewhere to stay when it rains as well!
